“If you want to feel good about the work you and your company do every day, this is the place.”
Jane was first drawn to Bristol-Myers Squibb by the company’s mission. “I wanted to work for a company I could feel proud of,” she says. “Bristol-Myers Squibb makes drugs that treat cancer and help restore health to people with HIV/AIDS.” She also liked that the company had won recognition both for family-friendly initiatives and policies that support women’s advancement.
In 1999, Jane joined Bristol-Myers Squibb as a human resources generalist. Today she is head of organizational development, supporting the entire company’s transformation to a BioPharma company. “We want to become a more agile and entrepreneurial company,” she says, “so my team and I are helping define the new high-performing culture and coming up with solutions for filling the gap between where we are today and where we want to go.”
To develop her team, Jane works with each person on her staff to build their skills. “When they leave my group, they’re well rounded as organizational development people,” she says. And Jane’s manager does the same for her. “She’s a really good coach,” says Jane, “and when I show her work in progress, she always adds to my thinking.”
As the mother of three, Jane appreciates the company’s emphasis on work-life balance, taking advantage of time off after she had her children, flexible work schedules, and the highly rated onsite daycare center that two of her children attended. “This has allowed two big pieces of my life—my work and my family—to co-exist,” she says.
Nearing her 10th anniversary at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Jane says the best is yet to come. “I can’t think of a more exciting time to be here, whether you look at the journey we’re taking to become a BioPharma company or the innovative medicines we’re bringing to patients,” she says.
